The Chicken Experience
I don’t trust Indian freezers. Rather, I know there’s power cuts, and I suspect there are too many and that stuff gets frozen and defrozen and refrozen. So my only 2 options to get chicken were to get an all ready and served meal, or get fresh chicken.. I decided to try the 2nd one and went to see the guy in his little bunker-like house who sells fresh chicken and eggs on my street. The eggs and a scale were on the counter and the chickens were in their little kennels at the back. I was a bit surprised to see just that and started wondering if I had misunderstood something. I asked the guy if I could get “bits” of chicken and he said no. I nearly fainted thinking that I was expected to buy the whole chicken still alive and just do it myself (I know, shame on me ag student, but the context just isn’t right here, with no fridge or anything else..). A guy came along who was obviously also willing to buy some chicken or eggs, so I asked him if he spoke English. He nodded and I asked him if this chicken seller sold bits of chicken. And in fact he did. Told him I wanted 150g. So the chicken seller got one featherless dead chicken out of a .. (I don’t know what).. and chopped some little bits off, chucked it on the scale and looked at me, waiting. I must’ve looked at that chicken with big round eyes again. Said I wanted 150g again. He didn’t look too happy, it was too few, I said I had no fridge and was just cooking for myself, so there wasn’t 100 ways of doing it. He finally got me a 300g bit and I took it, hardly believing I finally had my bit of chicken!
